Route description
One of the best mountain biking routes in Turku area is definitely Kullaanpolku (Gold trail) and its nearby path network. Kullaanpolku is 11.5 kilometers in length, and is part of Kuhankuono hiking route network. Mountain biking is allowed on this hiking route. In addition to the versatile technical and high-speed singletracks, Kullaanpolku also offers spectacular lake views as well as the possibility to climb up to the one of the highest hills in Turku region (Kullaanvuori). In addition to Kullaanpolku, this route travels north to Maskun Riviera and on the way back goes around the Hauninen basin. This results in a 24.7 km route, which is just the right length for a 3-5-hour mountain biking adventure.
The route starts at Piilipuunkatu 2, 21200 Raisio, where Raisio’s ABC is located. Here you have a big free car park, as well as the opportunity to buy some food and water. The starting point of the route is located only 10 km from the centre of Turku. A trip by car takes around 20 minutes.
The first singletrack starts already about 300 meters from the parking lot. During the next six kilometers, the route only follows singletracks, except for the one short gravel road transition. The singletracks are essentially technically easy or medium, but there are also more demanding sections on the route where the rock garden and root will provide a good challenge even for the most experienced mountain bikers. However, these sections are relatively short. In addition to traditional forest landscapes, there are also wheat fields along the route.
After around six kilometers, the route arrives to the Maskun Riviera. The small ponds and sand beaches of the Riviera offer a great place to have a break, especially during warm weather. Nearby Maskun Riviera, the singletrack turns into a fitness route, but it is also nice to pedal it due to the spectacular scenery.
After the Maskun Riviera, the Karevansuo is partially crossed along the duck-boards. After this, we continue mainly on the fast paths, which are technically challenging in some places. However, all the sections here are ridable, so you will not need to push your bike.
At around 13 kilometers, you will reach Kullaanvuori (Gold mountain), which is one of the highest in the region of Turku. The most experienced mountain bikers can try riding all the way to the top of Kullaanvuori, but it will require pretty good technical skills. My conquering of the Kullaanvuori in the saddle ended up a bit short. Now I have a good reason to return and ride this section again. At the top of the Kullaanvuori you can find a lookout tower with spectacular views of the route area. The downhill of Kullaanvuori is also really fun to ride!
After Kullaanvuori, the route continues along the easy and medium singletracks towards the Hauninen basin. Along the way, there will also be a few forest road transitions, wheat field views and even a farm.
At Hauninen basin, based on your fitness level and technical skills, you can either ride around the basin or continue directly to the end point of the route. The path around the Hauninen basin is technically difficult in many sections, what can be challenging for beginners. However, for the most experienced mountain bikers, the route will offer many fun bits for testing your technical skills. The bank of Hauninen basin is also a beautiful place to have the last break before the final section of the route.
The last section of the route follows mainly gravel roads, biking paths and forest roads. At the end of the route, there is a really fun downhill section, which can be pedaled at maximum speed, in case you still have some power in your legs.
In summary, the route is really fun and variable. It offers enough technical challenges and, at the same time, great lake and field sceneries. Strong recommendation for the route, regardless of your level!
PS. The route was updated on 24.06.2020 and no longer goes next to the Hujalantie stone quarry. This way, the route ridden in the video is slightly different from the map (gps-track).
