Route description
Hanko MTB route goes all the way around Hanko, mainly following the sea shore areas. Thus, this mountain biking route is ideal for exploring the city and relaxing on one of the many sandy beaches on the way. The route runs through almost all of Hanko’s main attractions. Along the way there are at least: Hanko city center, Water Tower, Eastern Harbor, Hanko Museum, Tulliniemi Nature Trail, The House of Four Winds, Hanko Church and the “Trail of Love”. Thus, you should reserve plenty of extra time for these places!HANKO mountain biking route is around 26 kilometers long circle route. It starts at the Silversand camping site (Lähteentie 27, Hanko) and also ends at the same point. In front of the campsite there is a parking place where you can leave your car for the duration of mountain biking (if you are not planning to stay at the campsite, please confirm this with the staff at the camp site). The beauty of the circle route is that you can also start it from any point along it.
The Hanko mountain biking route is not an official one and it is not marked in the terrain. There are also many junction areas on the route, so the GPS track is necessary for navigation. The route was designed while keeping versatility in mind. Although the route is mainly technically easy and fast, there are few short, more technical singletracks along the way. However, these sections can be skipped if you don’t need a technical challenge or want to pedal casually while enjoying the scenery. At least, the rocks along the “Trail of Love” can be very challenging, especially in rainy weather. For skipping them, please follow Appelgrenintie-road straight to the next leg of the route. Another challenging singletrack is between Telakkatie road and Hemming Elfving road. It can also be easily skipped by riding a gravel road.
Please note: A restriction sign for biking has appeared at around 17 kilometres mark (Puistovuori /Love Trail). I am currently discussing with the Hanko city authorities whether this sign is really a restriction or just a recommendation. If you wish, you can skip the Puistovuori loop (about 500 meters) along Appelgrenintie.
Hanko MTB route passes near home yards in many places. It is very important that you do not disturb local residents in any way, nor leave any rubbish behind! This way we will be able to enjoy mountain biking in the area also in the future.
Hanko is on of the best summer towns in Finland and is definitely worth a visit! With mountain bike you can see and experience much more in a shorter time with your whole family! In addition, Hanko’s trails are great especially for beginners!
Route is updated on 19.04.2021. It now has fiew small improvements. In contrast to the video, the route does not follow the Tulliniemi southern beach any more, as it is now a nature protection area, where mountain biking is not allowed.
